Similipal Launches All-India Tiger Estimation

Tiger Estimation Exercise Begins at Similipal Tiger Reserve

The Forest Department of Odisha on Saturday launched the All India Tiger Estimation–2026 at the Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district, officials said.

The large-scale exercise aims to assess the tiger population within the reserve following national protocols. According to Dr. Samrat Gowda, Deputy Director of the reserve, the estimation will be conducted in two phases.

The first phase includes a three-day carnivore and mega-herbivore sign survey, a four-day line transects survey, and a one-day count of vultures and other bird species.

The estimation process forms a crucial part of India’s ongoing tiger conservation efforts and helps track population trends across protected landscapes.
