Bhitarkanika Park closed for crocodile nesting season

Bhitarkanika National Park Closed for Crocodile Nesting Season
Authorities have closed Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district for three months starting May 1, coinciding with the mating and nesting season of estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles.
Officials said the temporary closure is aimed at ensuring a disturbance-free environment for the reptiles during their critical breeding period. The park, known for its rich mangrove ecosystem and one of the largest populations of saltwater crocodiles in India, attracts a large number of tourists throughout the year.
Assistant Chief Conservator Manas Das stated that noise from mechanised boats used by visitors can disrupt the nesting process of crocodiles. “The sound of tourist boats affects their natural behaviour, especially during the breeding season,” he noted.
The closure will remain in effect till July 31, after which the park is expected to reopen for visitors. Forest officials have urged tourists and nature enthusiasts to cooperate with the restrictions, emphasizing the importance of conservation and wildlife protection.
