Odisha Govt Drops Plan for Liquor Shacks on Puri Beach Amid Opposition

The Odisha government on Friday reversed its decision to allow liquor-serving beach shacks on Puri beach, following strong opposition from the Puri Shankaracharya and several socio-cultural organizations. The move comes just two days after concerns were raised about the potential impact on the sanctity of the area.

In a notification, the state excise department confirmed that no licenses will be issued for beach shacks within Puri municipality or within a 5 km radius of any socio-religious or cultural landmarks.

The decision marks a significant change to the state’s new excise policy, which was unveiled on August 30. The policy initially allowed liquor to be served at shacks near beaches, rivers, lakes, and dams to boost tourist experiences and state revenue.

The government’s quick response to the concerns reflects a balancing act between promoting tourism and respecting local traditions and cultural sensitivities.
