Odisha to Strengthen Cow Slaughter Act to Combat Animal Cruelty: CM Majhi
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed on Friday that the state government intends to amend the Orissa Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1960, to make it more effective in preventing animal cruelty. The announcement was made at the ‘Monsoon Meet’ organized by the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
CM Majhi highlighted the need to reinforce the existing legislation, aiming to close loopholes and ensure stronger protections for animals. The amendments are expected to introduce stricter measures, aligning the law with modern-day concerns about animal rights and welfare.
During his address, Majhi also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of improving the livelihood of small-scale farmers. He pointed to the growing importance of animal husbandry, improved animal health, pisciculture, and beekeeping in rural areas as key components of the government’s strategy to boost the agricultural economy.
The planned amendments to the six-decade-old legislation have garnered significant attention, as they reflect the state’s commitment to both animal welfare and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. By modernizing the law, Odisha aims to set a benchmark for protecting livestock while supporting farmers in expanding their income streams through related activities.
The proposed changes are expected to be tabled in the state assembly soon, with an eye on ensuring that animal cruelty is minimized and ethical farming practices are promoted across the state.
