Patriotic Zeal Peaks as Nation Launches Year-Long Celebration of 150 Years of Vande Mataram

India witnessed a remarkable surge of patriotic fervour as the year-long nationwide commemoration of 150 Years of Vande Mataram began on a grand scale, drawing participation from crores of citizens across the country and abroad.

The celebration, launched earlier this month with a national event led by the Prime Minister in New Delhi, marks 150 years of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s iconic composition Vande Mataram, a song that once united freedom fighters and continues to inspire generations.

1.25 Crore Citizens Join the Movement

In a historic outpouring of national pride, 1.25 crore Indians have already recorded and uploaded their renditions of Vande Mataram.
Across the country, enthusiasm for the campaign has surged, with 39,783 events uploaded on the official campaign website so far.

Mass Participation Across India

The celebrations have reached people across 36 States and 653 districts, including thousands of institutions:

  • 11,632 schools
  • 554 colleges

Students, teachers, youth groups, cultural organisations, and citizens from all walks of life are contributing to the growing movement, with many also watching the inaugural ceremony streamed live on November 7.

A Grand National Launch

The commemorative programme began with a spectacular inaugural event in Delhi featuring:

  • Performances by leading artists
  • Youth and cultural representatives
  • Release of a special commemorative coin and postage stamp

A highlight of the event was the “Vande Mataram: Naad Ekam, Roopam Anekam” concert—a vibrant cultural showcase celebrating unity in diversity through music.

Historic Mass Singing Across the Nation

One of the most powerful moments was the mass singing of the full version of Vande Mataram led by the Prime Minister.
Simultaneously, Chief Ministers, Governors, Lt. Governors, schoolchildren, officials, and citizens across India joined in a synchronized rendition, creating an unprecedented display of unity and patriotism.

Global Celebrations

Indian Missions and Posts worldwide are also participating enthusiastically, organizing mass singing events with the Indian diaspora and local communities, showcasing India’s cultural essence on a global stage.

Honouring A Song That Shaped a Nation

Vande Mataram, first published in Anandamath in the 1880s, became a rallying cry for India’s independence movement. Its invocation of the motherland as divine has given generations of Indians a shared emotional and cultural identity.

As the year-long commemoration unfolds, the movement aims to deepen this emotional connection, especially among India’s youth, ensuring the timeless national song remains etched in the collective consciousness of future generations.
