Lancet launches plastics health impact tracker

Lancet Launches Global Initiative to Track Health Impacts of Plastics Ahead of Landmark Treaty
In a significant step ahead of the signing of the world’s first-ever treaty on plastics regulation, The Lancet has launched a pioneering initiative to monitor the health effects of plastic pollution. The project, titled The Lancet Countdown on Health and Plastics, brings together an international consortium of researchers and health experts committed to studying the far-reaching impacts of plastics on human health.
This launch comes in tandem with the release of a comprehensive Health Policy document in The Lancet journal, which reviews current scientific evidence linking plastics—including microplastics and plastic-derived chemicals—to a range of health issues. The policy outlines the urgent need for global action, citing growing concerns about the long-term effects of plastic exposure on organs, metabolism, fertility, and even neurological development.
The initiative includes members of the UN-established Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, who are currently working on finalizing the global plastics treaty. Once signed, the treaty will represent a historic international effort to regulate plastic production, use, and disposal, particularly focusing on the chemical composition of plastics and their implications for both the environment and public health.
“This Countdown is a crucial tool to ensure health stays at the center of the plastics treaty,” said one of the lead authors. “We must not overlook the invisible burden plastics place on human well-being.”
With plastics now found in everything from drinking water to human blood, experts warn of rising health risks across populations, particularly in vulnerable communities. The Lancet Countdown aims to create a data-driven framework to inform policymakers and provide ongoing assessments of how plastic-related policies are impacting public health over time.
As the final negotiations near, health advocates are hopeful that the inclusion of evidence-backed health considerations will strengthen the treaty and push governments toward sustainable, health-centered solutions.
The Lancet Countdown on Health and Plastics will publish annual updates, tracking trends, research, and policy implementation globally, with the goal of keeping health outcomes at the forefront of environmental decision-making.
