Apara, Smriti reunite in Kyunki 2

Apara Mehta Gets Emotional Reuniting with Smriti Irani for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2

Television veterans Apara Mehta and Smriti Irani shared an emotional moment on the sets of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, as they reunited after nearly two decades for the sequel to one of Indian television’s most iconic shows.

Mehta, who reprised her role as Savita Virani in the form of a guardian spirit, joined Smriti Irani’s Tulsi Virani in the new season that began airing in July. The moment, both actors revealed, was deeply emotional and filled with nostalgia.

“We both had tears in our eyes,” Apara Mehta said while speaking about the reunion. “It wasn’t just two co-stars meeting again — it was old friends, reliving a legacy that left an indelible mark on Indian television.”

The original Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which aired from 2000 to 2008, redefined Indian soap operas and made household names of its lead cast. Mehta played the stern yet loving mother-in-law to Tulsi, a character that evolved into one of the show’s most beloved matriarchs. Though Savita died in the original series, her presence remains strong in the sequel, symbolized by her portrait on the family’s wall and her spiritual guidance to Tulsi.

Smriti Irani, now a Union Cabinet Minister, made a surprise return to the screen with this limited appearance. The makers wanted to honour the original characters while setting a new narrative tone for the second season.

“It felt like I never left the Virani house,” Mehta said. “Tulsi is now the matriarch, and Savita watches over her. It’s symbolic, but very real for those of us who lived this story for years.”

The new season continues the legacy of the original, blending nostalgia with fresh storylines for a new generation of viewers. For longtime fans, however, the brief but powerful reunion of Tulsi and Savita is a reminder of the emotional depth and enduring popularity of the original series.
