India favourites to win Asia Cup

India Tipped as Favourites for Asia Cup Hockey Glory, Say Former Greats

Former hockey stalwarts have backed India to dominate the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, tipping the team as clear favourites to reclaim continental supremacy and secure a direct berth in next year’s World Cup, jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.

India, the reigning Olympic bronze medallists and Asia’s top-ranked side, last won the Asia Cup crown in 2017 at Dhaka with a 2-1 victory over Malaysia in the final. However, in the 2022 edition at Jakarta, the team managed only a third-place finish behind champions South Korea and runners-up Malaysia.

Ajitpal Singh, captain of India’s 1975 World Cup-winning team, called the Harmanpreet Singh-led side “undisputed favourites” for the title but urged the players to remain grounded.

“This team has the skills, fitness and confidence to dominate the Asia Cup. But they must avoid complacency and take every opponent seriously,” Ajitpal observed.

Experts believe India’s blend of experienced campaigners and exciting young talents, combined with recent strong performances on the international circuit, gives them an edge over traditional Asian rivals like South Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan.

The Asia Cup, a crucial qualifier for the 2026 FIH World Cup, is set to witness fierce battles, but with the home advantage and depth in their squad, India are widely expected to lead the charge for continental glory.
