Goyal to Meet Exporters on Tariffs

Trump Tariffs on India: Piyush Goyal to Meet Exporters on April 9

In response to the Trump administration’s decision to impose an additional 26% reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to meet with exporters on Wednesday, April 9, to assess the potential impact on India’s trade.

According to an industry official, the high-level meeting will include senior commerce ministry officials, representatives from various Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), and members of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). The discussions aim to identify challenges arising from the new US tariffs and explore possible policy responses.

The tariffs, recently reinstated by the former US President Donald Trump’s administration, are expected to significantly affect Indian exporters, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on the American market.

An exporter, speaking on condition of anonymity, urged the government to consider fiscal incentives to help cushion the blow, especially for small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that may be disproportionately affected. “MSMEs are already under pressure, and the additional tariff burden could make their products less competitive in the global market,” the exporter said.

The April 9 meeting is expected to focus on strategies to safeguard India’s export interests, mitigate losses, and possibly initiate diplomatic channels to address trade concerns with the US.
