EC Warns Parties Against AI Misuse, Orders Takedown of Misinformation Within 3 Hours

The Election Commission (EC) on Friday issued a stern advisory to political parties, directing them to take down AI-generated misinformation within three hours of it being reported, amid growing concerns over the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in election campaigns.
The move comes ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, with the EC warning that AI-generated deepfakes and altered content pose a serious threat to democratic discourse by their ability to “masquerade as truth.”
The advisory follows multiple complaints from parties alleging that rivals were using AI tools to spread fake or misleading content.
Reiterating its earlier guidelines issued in May 2024 and January 2025, the poll body emphasised that political parties must ensure that their campaign material—especially on social media—remains authentic, verifiable, and transparent.
The EC further cautioned that violations could attract strict action under existing election and IT laws, as it works to maintain fairness and integrity in the electoral process amid the rapid rise of AI-driven propaganda.
