Rs 200 Commemorative Coin Released to Mark 200 Years of Rani Chennamma’s Victory in Kittur War

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday released a Rs 200 commemorative coin to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Rani Chennamma’s victory in the Kittur War, marking a significant milestone in India’s history of resistance against colonial rule.

The event, held in New Delhi, also marked the conclusion of a year-long nationwide commemoration of the valiant queen’s triumph at Kittur, located in present-day Karnataka.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shekhawat paid glowing tribute to Rani Chennamma, calling her an enduring symbol of courage, patriotism, and women’s empowerment. “Her defiance against British rule continues to inspire generations to serve the nation with dedication and courage,” he said.

Rani Chennamma, who led the Kittur uprising in 1824, is widely remembered as one of the earliest female freedom fighters in India, known for her bravery and unyielding spirit in defending her kingdom’s sovereignty.
