CAG Girish Chandra Murmu Inaugurates Chadwick House Museum in Shimla

Chadwick House, a notable landmark in Shimla, has a storied history. Its historical importance is accentuated by Mahatma Gandhi’s stay in 1946 during his visit to Shimla for the Cabinet Mission. Post-independence, in 1950, the house became home to a training school for the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS). However, after the training establishment relocated, Chadwick House fell into disrepair and was nearly demolished in 2018.

The newly inaugurated museum now breathes new life into Chadwick House, preserving its rich heritage. The ‘Chadwick House Navigating Audit Heritage’ Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the legacy and significant contributions of the CAG over the years. Exhibits detail the history, notable audits, and key moments that have shaped the institution.

During the inauguration, Murmu emphasized the importance of preserving historical sites like Chadwick House. He highlighted the museum’s role in educating the public about the vital functions of the CAG and its impact on the nation’s governance and accountability.

Local dignitaries, historians, and officials attended the inauguration ceremony, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for the preservation of Chadwick House. The restoration and conversion of this historical building into a museum have been widely welcomed, seen as a significant effort to preserve and celebrate the nation’s audit heritage.

The Chadwick House Museum is now open to the public, offering an insightful journey through the history of the CAG and its pivotal role in India’s administrative framework. This transformation not only preserves a crucial piece of Shimla’s history but also ensures that future generations can appreciate the enduring legacy of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
