The Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, on Saturday addressed the 9th convocation ceremony of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh in Dharamshala, praising the state’s cultural heritage and urging youth to play a vital role in nation-building.
Describing Himachal Pradesh as both Dev Bhoomi and Veer Bhoomi, the Vice President said the state has made significant contributions to India’s armed forces and is known for its rich traditions, hospitality and vibrant culture.
Highlighting India’s academic heritage, he referred to ancient centres of learning such as Nalanda University and Takshashila, which flourished through scholarship, debate and intellectual exchange. He stressed that modern universities must focus on faculty development, innovation in teaching, interdisciplinary research and global collaboration.
Radhakrishnan noted that the university is actively implementing the National Education Policy 2020 and has introduced courses on Indian Knowledge Traditions. He also appreciated the institution’s efforts to translate works into Dogri and Hindi literature into Punjabi, saying such initiatives promote Swadeshi Chintan and strengthen confidence in India’s intellectual traditions.
Emphasising the importance of cooperation between central and state institutions, the Vice President called for greater collaboration through joint research, faculty exchanges, digital resources and academic partnerships to build a globally competitive higher education system aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat.
He also highlighted government initiatives such as Startup India and Make in India for creating opportunities for young innovators and commended the university’s “Community Lab” initiative that connects students with nearby communities.
Expressing concern over the impact of substance abuse, the Vice President praised the university’s efforts to create a drug-free campus and urged students to take a pledge to say “No to Drugs”. He called on youth to use their knowledge for the welfare of society and keep the nation first, emphasising the spirit of Rashtra Pratham.
At the convocation, more than 700 students received degrees and medals, with women dominating the honours list. Out of 32 gold medals awarded, 23 were won by women, reflecting their growing empowerment and contribution to the country’s progress.
