India meets record 256 GW power demand

India Meets Record 256 GW Power Demand Without Shortage

India successfully met its all-time highest peak electricity demand of 256.1 GW on April 25, 2026, without any power shortage, while also continuing electricity exports to neighbouring countries.

The milestone surpasses the previous peak of 250 GW recorded in May 2024 and reflects the growing energy needs driven by rising summer temperatures and increased economic activity across the country.

According to official data, electricity consumption in April 2026 rose by 8.9 per cent compared to the same period last year. The achievement was supported by the addition of around 65 GW of generation capacity during FY 2025–26, strengthening the country’s overall power infrastructure.

The demand was managed through advanced resource planning, real-time coordination among grid operators, and efficient use of transmission systems. A diverse energy mix—including thermal, hydro, nuclear, and renewable sources—helped ensure grid stability during peak load conditions.

Renewable energy, particularly solar power, played a key role in meeting demand, supported by hydro and other flexible generation sources.

Officials said the system is now well-prepared to handle expected peak demand of around 270 GW this year, highlighting India’s growing capability to manage large-scale electricity requirements efficiently and reliably.
