Study Highlights PM-JAY’s Role in Improving Timely Cancer Treatment

A recent study has revealed that enrolling in the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), India’s flagship health insurance program, has significantly improved timely access to cancer treatment.

Conducted by researchers from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, the study found a 33% increase in timely treatment initiation for cancer patients covered under PM-JAY.

Patients diagnosed after the program’s launch in 2018 had a 36% higher likelihood of beginning treatment within 30 days compared to those diagnosed between 1995 and 2017. This improvement underscores the scheme’s impact in reducing delays that are critical to cancer care.

Published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia, the findings highlight the importance of PM-JAY in bridging healthcare gaps. Researchers emphasized that the program has been instrumental in addressing barriers to early treatment, thereby improving patient outcomes.

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY aims to provide affordable and quality healthcare to over 500 million people across India, including financial protection for critical illnesses such as cancer.
