Shubman Gill Replaces Rohit as Captain

Shubman Gill Appointed India ODI Captain, Rohit Sharma Steps Down

Ahmedabad, Oct 4: In a major leadership change, the BCCI selectors on Saturday removed Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy, appointing Shubman Gill as the new captain with an eye on the 2027 ICC World Cup.

Rohit Sharma, one of India’s most successful white-ball captains, joins Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the only Indian leaders to have guided the team to three ICC white-ball finals, winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy. He also had a runners-up finish at the 2019 ODI World Cup.

During his tenure as ODI skipper, Rohit led India in 56 matches, winning 42, achieving a remarkable 76% winning percentage, underscoring his consistency and tactical acumen.

The move reflects a strategic transition plan by Indian cricket authorities, aiming to build a younger leadership core around Shubman Gill to prepare for major ICC tournaments, particularly the 2027 World Cup.

Gill, known for his elegant batting and calm demeanor under pressure, is expected to bring fresh energy and long-term stability to India’s ODI setup, while Rohit will continue to play a crucial role in the team as a senior player and mentor.

This development marks the end of an era under Rohit’s captaincy while signaling a new chapter in Indian cricket leadership with Shubman Gill at the helm.
