Gill Calls Leading India ‘Biggest Honour’

Leading India is Biggest Honour, Says New ODI Captain Shubman Gill

Ahmedabad, Oct 4: Newly appointed India ODI captain Shubman Gill has described his elevation to the role as the “biggest honour,” expressing pride in carrying forward the legacy left by Rohit Sharma, who will now play under him in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia.

Gill’s appointment comes after the BCCI selectors removed Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy on Saturday, in a strategic move aimed at preparing the team for the 2027 World Cup.

In his first reaction after being named captain, Gill said, “It’s the biggest honour to be able to lead your country in the one-day format. To lead a side that has done so well is immense pride for me, and I hope I’ll be able to do great,” speaking on bcci.tv.

The young Test skipper now takes on the responsibility of guiding India’s ODI team, while Rohit Sharma, one of India’s most successful white-ball captains, continues to contribute as a senior player. Analysts view this as a long-term leadership transition, aimed at building a strong team foundation for upcoming ICC tournaments.

The series in Australia will be Gill’s first challenge as ODI captain, where he is expected to lead a balanced side and instil fresh energy into India’s white-ball setup.
