Unity in Diversity: Odisha Governor stresses shared festival spirit
Bhubaneswar, April 14 : Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Tuesday underscored the importance of celebrating festivals together as a means to strengthen national unity and reflect India’s rich cultural diversity.
Addressing a joint celebration at New Abhishek Hall in Lok Bhavan, the Governor marked multiple cultural occasions including Pana Sankranti, Bihu, Vishu, Puthandu, Pohela Boishakh, Baisakhi, and Himachal Pradesh Formation Day. He said India’s diversity remains a source of strength that binds the nation together.
“When we celebrate each other’s festivals, we reinforce the bonds that unite us as one nation. This shared spirit reflects the essence of India, where diversity strengthens our collective identity,” he said.
The event was attended by First Lady Jayashree Kambhampati and several dignitaries.
Highlighting Pana Sankranti, the Governor noted that it marks the Odia New Year and reflects the state’s rich cultural heritage. He said the tradition of preparing and sharing pana symbolises compassion, generosity, and togetherness, while associated rituals promote values of service and empathy.
Referring to Jagannath culture, he said it embodies inclusiveness, equality, and devotion, fostering universal brotherhood across communities.
On Himachal Pradesh Formation Day, the Governor described the state as a symbol of unity and resilience with a vibrant cultural legacy. He also lauded the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative for enhancing inter-state cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
He observed that festivals such as Bihu, Vishu, Puthandu, Pohela Boishakh, and Baisakhi, though regionally distinct, share common themes of hope, gratitude, and renewal, thereby reinforcing the spirit of national unity.
Eminent litterateur and lyricist Devdas Chhotray also addressed the gathering. The programme featured cultural performances representing traditions from different states, while Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Governor Dr. Roopa Roshan Sahoo delivered the welcome address.
At the outset, the Governor and the First Lady paid floral tributes to B. R. Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary, describing him as the principal architect of the Constitution and a visionary who championed justice, equality, and human dignity.
