President of India Presents Fifth National Water Awards

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, presented the fifth National Water Awards in a ceremony held in New Delhi today. The awards aim to recognize and promote exemplary efforts in water conservation and management across the country.
Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu emphasized that water is not only a basic necessity but also a fundamental human right. She noted that access to clean water is essential for building a healthy and prosperous society, stressing that water scarcity and poor sanitation disproportionately impact the underprivileged by affecting health, food security, and livelihoods.
President Murmu expressed concern about the depletion and pollution of freshwater resources, attributing these issues to human activities. She acknowledged the Indian government’s proactive steps toward water conservation and water harvesting, and highlighted the need for a collective effort to safeguard water resources.
“Our ancestors practiced water conservation by building ponds and reservoirs, ensuring sustainable water management. Sadly, we are forgetting these traditions, and some have even encroached on these water bodies for personal gain,” the President remarked. She warned that this has led to both water shortages and flood-like situations in times of excessive rainfall.
Stressing the importance of active citizen participation, President Murmu urged everyone to take small, everyday steps to contribute to water conservation, such as avoiding wastage, ensuring proper water storage, and supporting the renovation of traditional water reservoirs.
The National Water Awards were presented in nine categories, including Best State, Best District, Best Urban Local Body, and Best Industry. The President lauded the efforts of the awardees, expressing confidence that their best practices would inspire communities nationwide to adopt sustainable water use practices.
The awards are an important initiative to create awareness about water conservation and encourage responsible water management across India.
