President Murmu lauds India’s footwear sector

President Murmu highlights India’s growing footwear sector at FDDI convocation
President Droupadi Murmu on Monday graced the convocation ceremony of the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in the capital, emphasising the sector’s rising global prominence and its role in driving self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Addressing the graduating students, the President said India is becoming increasingly self-reliant and is poised to expand its influence on the global economic stage. She noted that the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has designated the footwear sector as a ‘Champion Sector’, adding that the government is actively providing incentives to boost investment.
Highlighting India’s strong global standing, the President said the country ranks second worldwide in both footwear production and consumption. During 2024–25, India exported footwear worth over USD 2.5 billion, nearly four times its imports of USD 680 million. To further boost exports, she stressed the need for continued expansion of the footwear industry, which will open more opportunities for young designers and entrepreneurs.
President Murmu also welcomed the signing of an MoU between FDDI and the University of Northampton, calling it a new milestone in India–UK cooperation under the Free Trade Agreement. She said the partnership’s focus on sustainable materials and circular economy practices reflects both nations’ commitment to environmental conservation.
Encouraging students, she underscored that footwear design carries multiple dimensions — from improving health and functionality for users to generating employment and strengthening India’s export capabilities. She urged graduates to become brand ambassadors of India’s craftsmanship and to contribute proactively to the national goal of a self-reliant India.
