President Murmu Hails Civil Servants’ Role in Nation-Building on Civil Services Day

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday extended greetings to civil servants on the occasion of Civil Services Day, lauding their vital role in shaping India’s development and public welfare through impactful policymaking.

In her message, the President emphasized that civil servants have remained instrumental in driving the country’s progress by implementing reforms and ensuring last-mile delivery of government services.

“Their contribution to policymaking and implementation has significantly influenced the well-being of citizens and the country’s overall development,” President Murmu said.

Civil Services Day is observed annually on April 21 to commemorate the iconic address of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister, to the nation’s first batch of civil servants in 1947 at Metcalf House in Delhi. In his address, he described civil servants as the “steel frame of India” — a phrase that continues to symbolize their steadfast role in governance.

The occasion also serves to acknowledge the dedication, integrity, and commitment of public administrators who uphold the values of transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public service.

Various ministries and departments across the country marked the day with events highlighting best practices in governance and honoring outstanding contributions by civil servants.
