President Murmu Urges Indian Diaspora in Angola to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
Calls for active role in realizing shared prosperity of India and Angola
President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, addressed members of the Indian community in Angola at a reception hosted by the Ambassador of India in Luanda on Monday evening. The event was attended by Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways Shri V. Somanna, Members of Parliament Shri Parbhubhai Nagarbhai Vasava and Smt D.K. Aruna, among others.
In her address, President Murmu highlighted the deep-rooted and mutually beneficial partnership between India and Africa, particularly Angola, emphasizing that the relationship is built on the pillars of equality, mutual trust, and shared aspirations for progress. She reaffirmed that India’s engagement with Africa continues to evolve under the framework of the India–Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) and expressed hope that India would soon host the next IAFS Summit.
The President underlined Angola’s importance as a key partner in India’s energy security, noting that bilateral trade between the two nations had surpassed the historic mark of USD 5 billion last year. She pointed out that India is one of Angola’s top trade partners and a major supplier of pharmaceuticals, food products, refined petroleum, automobiles, and machinery.
Commending Indian enterprises active in sectors such as retail, tourism, diamonds, energy, infrastructure, hospitality, and agriculture, President Murmu said these investments have contributed significantly to Angola’s economic growth and employment generation.
Acknowledging the contribution of the Indian diaspora—numbering around 8,000 in Angola—President Murmu lauded their entrepreneurial spirit, hard work, and professional excellence. She urged them to continue playing a proactive role in fostering trade, investment, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
“There are immense opportunities to further strengthen our cooperation. I urge all members of the Indian community to take an active part in endeavours that realise the shared prosperity of India and Angola,” the President said.
The address marked a significant moment in India’s diplomatic outreach to Africa, reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment to deepen its economic and cultural engagement with the continent through its vibrant overseas community.
