PM Modi Conferred Sri Lanka’s Highest Honour for Foreign Leaders

New Delhi, April 5: In a significant diplomatic gesture, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was today conferred the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana award by the President of Sri Lanka, H.E. Anura Kumara Dissanayaka. The award is the highest civilian honour Sri Lanka bestows on foreign leaders, marking a historic moment as it is the first time an Indian leader has received this prestigious recognition.

The award has been presented to Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his unwavering commitment to strengthening the deep-rooted friendship between India and Sri Lanka, as well as his consistent efforts in enhancing bilateral relations across various spheres.

Accepting the honour with humility, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion people of India and underscored the cultural, historical, and civilizational ties that unite the people of both nations. “This is not just a personal honour, but a tribute to the strong and enduring bond between our two countries,” he said.

The Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana is reserved for leaders who have made exceptional contributions to fostering close ties with Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Modi’s emphasis on regional cooperation, humanitarian assistance during times of crisis, and people-centric development partnerships have played a pivotal role in elevating India-Sri Lanka relations in recent years.

This honour further cements the spirit of mutual respect and friendship that continues to define the India-Sri Lanka relationship, which is rooted in shared history, culture, and aspirations for regional peace and prosperity.
