Odisha to Create SOP for Police Conduct with Defence Personnel After Assault Incident

Odisha to Establish SOP for Police Conduct with Defence Personnel Following Assault Incident

Cuttack, October 9, 2024: The Odisha government announced on Tuesday that it will soon formulate a standard operating procedure (SOP) to ensure appropriate behavior towards defence personnel at police stations. This commitment was made in an affidavit submitted to the Orissa High Court by senior IPS officer Dayal Gangwar.

The move comes in response to a recent incident at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar, which sparked widespread public outrage. In early September, an army officer and his female friend alleged that they were assaulted by police officers when they visited the station to lodge a complaint regarding a road rage incident.

The High Court had previously instructed Gangwar to provide a report on the incident, highlighting the need for a formalized approach to ensure respectful treatment of military personnel by law enforcement officials. The upcoming SOP aims to establish clear guidelines for police conduct when interacting with defence personnel, promoting accountability and sensitivity in handling such cases.

This initiative reflects the government’s acknowledgment of the need to protect the rights and dignity of defence personnel and to maintain trust between the armed forces and law enforcement agencies.
