Odisha Pushes Regional Power Cooperation Forward

Odisha Ready to Supply Surplus Power to Neighbouring States: CM Majhi

Bhubaneswar, July 10 : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced that the state, as a power-surplus region in eastern India, is ready to supply surplus electricity to neighbouring states through mutually agreed arrangements.

Speaking at the 27th meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council in Ranchi, Majhi said Odisha’s power sector showcases robust operational and financial strength, with an impressive 99.9% transmission availability — the highest in the country. Despite geographical challenges including hilly terrain, dense forests, and a significant tribal population, Odisha has achieved near-complete electrification, he added.

He highlighted that rural areas in the state receive up to 23 hours of electricity daily, while urban regions benefit from nearly 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. Reflecting Odisha’s efficient power distribution, three of the state’s four power utilities have secured A+ national rankings for excellence in service delivery.

In renewable energy, the Chief Minister said Odisha is leading the way in eastern India by formulating a comprehensive Energy Transition Action Plan. The plan aims to achieve a 40% share of renewable energy in the state’s total energy mix by 2030, in alignment with the Odisha Renewable Energy Policy, 2022, and the national Panchamrit commitments.

Odisha has also begun developing small hydroelectric projects and conducting wind resource assessments. To support regional collaboration in renewable energy, Majhi announced that a Renewable Research Institute is being set up in the state.

Additionally, the state has proposed a Regional Research and Testing Laboratory of the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in Bhubaneswar to address the technical requirements of the eastern region.

Expressing gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for convening the council meeting, Majhi said, “This platform is vital for discussing mutual interests, regional cooperation, and inclusive development.”

He urged all participants to use the meeting as a catalyst for action, stating, “Let this not be just a review of pending issues, but a renewed beginning for regional transformation aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat.”
