Odisha Plans Jagannath Culture Heritage Centre

Odisha to Establish Jagannath Culture Museum, Library and Research Centre in Puri

In a major step towards preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Lord Jagannath, the Odisha government on Friday announced plans to set up a dedicated museum, library, and research centre in the holy city of Puri.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement during a press conference in Bhubaneswar, emphasizing the state’s commitment to safeguarding the cultural and literary legacy of Jagannath worship, which has been central to Odisha’s spiritual and social life for centuries.

“The proposed complex will be a landmark institution dedicated to the in-depth study, documentation, and dissemination of Jagannath culture and literature. It will also serve as an educational and cultural hub for researchers, devotees, and tourists,” Majhi said.

The upcoming centre will feature a state-of-the-art museum housing rare artifacts, manuscripts, and displays related to the Jagannath tradition. The library will include extensive collections of religious texts, literary works, and research materials, while the research centre will support academic exploration of the history, rituals, and influence of Jagannath culture.

Additionally, the campus will host a 300-seat auditorium designed for seminars, lectures, and community events. A light and sound show will be held daily to narrate the story of Lord Jagannath and the traditions of the Puri temple. An open-air stage will also be constructed for regular cultural performances, showcasing Odisha’s classical and folk art forms.

The initiative is expected to attract both national and international scholars and pilgrims, enhancing Puri’s stature as a cultural and religious destination. The project aligns with the government’s broader efforts to promote spiritual tourism and preserve Odisha’s unique cultural identity.
