Odisha Govt Extends Mid-Day Meal Scheme to Class 9 and 10 Students

In a significant move to enhance student welfare, the Odisha government has announced the extension of the mid-day meal (MDM) scheme to include students of Class 9 and 10. Until now, the scheme was available only for students up to Class 8.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing the centenary celebrations of Ranihat High School in Cuttack. He emphasized that the decision aims to support the nutritional needs of secondary-level students and curb dropout rates.

“The mid-day meal scheme has been instrumental in ensuring better nutrition and attendance for school children. Extending this facility to Class 9 and 10 will encourage students to continue their education without worrying about food security,” the Chief Minister stated.

The expansion of the scheme is expected to benefit thousands of students across the state, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Experts believe that improved nutrition at the secondary level will contribute to better academic performance and overall development.

The government is likely to implement the extended scheme in a phased manner, with necessary budgetary allocations and logistical arrangements in place. Educationists and parents have welcomed the initiative, calling it a crucial step towards strengthening school education in Odisha.

Further details on the rollout and implementation are expected to be announced by the state’s education department in the coming weeks.
