Odisha Congress Forms Panel to Probe Atrocities Against Women

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate cases of atrocities against women in the state. The decision comes amid allegations that at least seven women face violence every day in Odisha, the party stated in an official release.
Expressing deep concern over the rising cases of violence against women, the OPCC claimed that 1,600 such incidents have been reported in the last eight months under the BJP government. The party alleged that the state government has failed to curb crimes against women and ensure their safety.
Newly appointed OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das took the initiative to form the seven-member committee, which will be led by former minister Nagendra Pradhan. The panel will examine reported cases, meet victims and their families, and prepare a detailed report on the matter.
“The increasing number of atrocities against women is alarming, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure their security. We have formed this committee to bring out the truth and take necessary steps to seek justice for the victims,” Das said.
The committee is expected to submit its report soon, following which the Congress will take further steps, including raising the issue at various levels to ensure strict action against the perpetrators.
The OPCC has urged the state government to take urgent measures to address the situation and strengthen the law-and-order system to prevent crimes against women. Meanwhile, the BJP government has yet to respond to the allegations made by the Congress.
The fact-finding committee is likely to visit different districts to assess the situation on the ground and gather evidence regarding the alleged rise in crimes against women. The Congress has also called upon civil society organizations and activists to support the initiative in ensuring justice for the victims.
