Bhima Mandali to Gain National Recognition

Bhima Mandali to be Promoted at National Level: Dharmendra Pradhan

Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: The ancient historical site of Bhima Mandali in Sambalpur district will soon gain national recognition, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced during his visit to the site on Tuesday.

Exploring the caves and inscriptions near the Champali River in the Nakatideul block, Pradhan highlighted the archaeological significance of Bhima Mandali, which dates back to the Stone Age. He revealed that a national-level workshop would be organized, and extensive research would be conducted to unravel its historical and cultural importance.

Accompanied by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials, Pradhan discussed the site’s origins, emphasizing that Bhima Mandali houses over 100 caves with evidence of early human civilization. Experts estimate that human settlements here date back 30,000 years, making it an extraordinary archaeological site.

According to ASI data, the caves feature ancient inscriptions, depictions of animals like deer and elephants, and symbolic languages from prehistoric times. Artifacts such as stone tools, cave paintings, and carvings have also been discovered, further strengthening Bhima Mandali’s historical value.

“This site proves that our civilization is deeply rooted in antiquity. From Redhakhol, where Saint Kavi Bhim Bhoi spread the message of Mahima Dharma, to the archaeological marvels of Bhima Mandali, this region holds immense historical significance,” said Pradhan.

He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for recognizing Bhima Mandali and Devjharan as official state tourism sites.

Sambalpur district is home to several cultural and historical landmarks, including Maa Samaleswari Temple, the birthplace of Veer Surendra Sai in Khinda, Hirakud Dam, and Usha Kothi. To enhance the region’s visibility, Pradhan announced plans to establish an integrated tourism cluster encompassing Debrigarh, Bhima Mandali, and Hirakud, which will boost employment and attract more visitors.

Furthermore, research collaborations with institutions like the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Sambalpur Gangadhar University will be initiated to document and promote the site’s historical significance globally.

“This initiative will place Bhima Mandali on the global archaeological map while boosting regional tourism and employment,” Pradhan added.
