Public Hearings on Kulda Opencast Project Expansion Successfully Conclude

Bhubaneswar, Feb 24 – The public hearings for the proposed expansion of the Kulda Opencast Project (OCP) under the Basundhara Area of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) were successfully completed across five locations in Odisha’s Sundargarh district. The hearings were conducted as per the directives of the Orissa High Court, focusing on the project’s expansion from 634.205 hectares to 921.305 hectares.

According to MCL sources, the public hearings were held in the villages of Siarmal, Baliga, Bankibahal, Saradega, and Tumulia, where local residents participated actively, sharing their views and concerns on environmental and pollution control measures. The company emphasized its ongoing efforts to mitigate dust pollution and improve the quality of life for nearby communities.

P.B. Reddy, General Manager of the Basundhara Area, MCL, attended the meetings and reiterated MCL’s commitment to implementing enhanced environmental safeguards. He assured villagers that necessary measures would be taken to address their concerns, including pollution control and infrastructure improvements.

Residents from multiple villages, including Baliga, Bankibahal, Siaramal, Tetelgadi, Tumulia, Pharakbahal, Kundaren, and Saradega, voiced their opinions on issues related to environmental impact, pollution management, and demands for better infrastructure such as improved lighting, drinking water, and sanitation facilities.

The hearings were conducted peacefully with the support of the district administration and police. However, a minor disturbance was reported on February 20, 2025, in Tumulia village when a group of individuals obstructed the road leading to the hearing venue. Authorities swiftly managed the situation, ensuring that the proceedings continued smoothly.

Expressing gratitude to the participants, Reddy thanked the villagers for their cooperation and valuable input. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Sundargarh district administration, police, and officers from the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) in ensuring the successful completion of the hearings.

“We take pride in providing the best compensation in the industry and remain committed to the welfare of communities surrounding our operations,” Reddy stated. He reaffirmed MCL’s dedication to sustainable energy production while addressing the needs and concerns of the local population.

The successful conclusion of these public hearings marks a crucial step in the expansion of the Kulda Opencast Project, which is expected to play a significant role in meeting the country’s growing energy demands while ensuring environmental and community welfare.
