Kane Williamson Retires from T20 Internationals Ahead of West Indies Series
AUCKLAND, Nov 2: Charismatic batter and former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals with immediate effect, just days before the start of the five-match home series against the touring West Indies.
Williamson, 35, represented New Zealand in 93 T20Is, scoring over 2,500 runs and leading the Black Caps in several memorable contests, including the 2021 T20 World Cup final. Known for his calm demeanour and tactical brilliance, he remains one of the most respected figures in world cricket.
Confirming his decision, New Zealand Cricket stated that Williamson’s name was absent from the 14-member squad announced for the upcoming T20I series beginning in Auckland on Wednesday.
The veteran cricketer recently took on a new role as strategic advisor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2026 season, signalling a transition toward mentoring and leadership roles beyond the playing field.
While stepping away from the shortest format, Williamson is expected to continue contributing to New Zealand’s Test and ODI sides, where his experience and consistency remain invaluable.
His retirement marks the end of an era for New Zealand’s T20 side, as the team looks to build a new core of players ahead of future global tournaments.
