Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Resumes After Five Years

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra to Resume in June 2025 After Five-Year Hiatus

The revered Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to recommence in June 2025, marking the end of a five-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent border tensions between India and China. This development signifies a positive stride towards normalizing bilateral relations between the two nations.

The pilgrimage, deeply significant to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers, will be conducted through two routes: the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the Yatra will take place from June to August 2025. This year, five batches of 50 pilgrims each will travel via the Lipulekh Pass, while ten batches of 50 pilgrims each will proceed through the Nathu La Pass.

The resumption follows diplomatic engagements, including the 23rd meeting of India and China’s Special Representatives in Beijing in December 2024, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating the pilgrimage. Further discussions in early 2025 led to agreements on various confidence-building measures, such as resuming direct flights and enhancing people-to-people exchanges.

Pilgrims interested in undertaking the Yatra must apply through the official portal kmy.gov.in. The selection process is computerized, ensuring a fair and gender-balanced approach. Applicants must be Indian citizens aged between 18 and 70 years, possess a valid passport, and meet specific medical and physical fitness criteria.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not only a spiritual journey but also a testament to the enduring cultural and religious ties between India and China. Its resumption is anticipated to foster goodwill and strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries.
