Jaishankar, Araghchi to Discuss India-Iran Ties

India and Iran Convene 20th Joint Commission Meeting Amid Regional Tensions

In a significant diplomatic engagement, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to hold extensive talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday, May 8. The discussions will take place during the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Iran, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty. This marks Dr. Araghchi’s first visit to India since assuming office in August 2024.

The two-day visit, spanning May 7 and 8, comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including Indian tourists. India has attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, leading to escalated military postures and diplomatic strains between the neighboring countries. The Statesman+8AP News+8The Tribune+8

Prior to his arrival in New Delhi, Dr. Araghchi visited Islamabad, where he met with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During these meetings, he emphasized the need for restraint and offered Iran’s assistance in mediating the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan.

In New Delhi, Dr. Araghchi’s itinerary includes a bilateral meeting with Minister Jaishankar at Hyderabad House on May 8 at 11:25 AM, followed by a call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 4:00 PM. The Joint Commission Meeting will focus on reviewing mutual interests and strengthening bilateral relations, with particular attention to trade, economic cooperation, and regional connectivity projects such as the Chabahar Port development.

This high-level engagement underscores the longstanding historical and civilizational ties between India and Iran, and reflects a shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation amidst current geopolitical challenges.
