Hardik Singh Named Captain of HIL Governing Council Team

Indian hockey midfielder Hardik Singh has been appointed captain of the HIL Governing Council Team for the upcoming Hero Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2026, which is set to begin on January 3, 2026, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai.

The HIL Governing Council side will open its campaign on January 5 against SG Pipers. Hardik will lead a balanced squad that blends experience and youth, featuring seasoned campaigners such as Lalit Upadhyay, Sam Ward, Surender Kumar and Kane Russell, alongside promising youngsters including Gurjot Singh, Manmeet Singh and Talem Priyoborta, who were part of the Indian colts that recently secured a bronze medal at the FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup.

Expressing his delight at being entrusted with the leadership role, Hardik said he was grateful for the opportunity and excited to guide the team through the season. He highlighted the importance of teamwork and learning, noting that the mix of young talent and experienced international players would be key to a strong campaign.

The HIL Governing Council team has taken over operations from the UP Rudras franchise ahead of the 2026 season to ensure continuity for the players.

The Hero Men’s Hockey India League 2026 will feature eight franchises—Tamil Nadu Dragons, Hyderabad Toofans, JSW Soorma Hockey Club, defending champions Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, Ranchi Royals, SG Pipers and HIL Governing Council—competing in a single round-robin format, followed by playoffs and a grand final on January 26 at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.

Matches will be played across Chennai, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar, with the tournament promising high-intensity action, daily double-headers and strong fan engagement throughout the season.
