Gaurav Gogoi Urges Social Media Debate

Gaurav Gogoi Calls for Lok Sabha Debate on Social Media’s Impact on Youth Mental Health
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has urged a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the impact of social media on the mental health of Indian youth, particularly in the post-pandemic era.
Raising the issue in the House on Thursday, Gogoi referenced the Netflix series Adolescence, which delves into concerns surrounding youth mental health and the rise of online influencers promoting toxic masculinity. He emphasized that increased dependence on social media platforms following the COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant mental health challenges among young people in India.
Gogoi highlighted that social media platforms, while providing connectivity and information, have also contributed to anxiety, depression, and other psychological issues among adolescents. He called for policymakers to address the risks associated with excessive screen time, cyberbullying, and the glorification of harmful behaviors by influencers.
“The mental health of our youth is a serious concern. The rise of online influencers who promote toxic masculinity and unrealistic standards of success and behavior is harming the younger generation. We need a comprehensive debate and policy interventions to safeguard our youth,” Gogoi stated in the House.
The issue of social media’s impact on mental health has gained traction worldwide, with governments and organizations advocating for better digital wellness policies. Gogoi’s appeal adds to the growing discourse on the need for stronger regulations and awareness programs to support youth mental well-being in India.
With mental health concerns on the rise, his call for debate in the Lok Sabha is expected to spark discussions among lawmakers on potential measures to mitigate the negative effects of social media while preserving its benefits.
