Forest officials rescue barking deer Ganjam

Two-Month-Old Barking Deer Rescued in Odisha’s Ganjam
Forest officials in Odisha’s Ganjam district rescued a two-month-old barking deer (Indian muntjac) from a house in Gunakhala village under the Badagada forest range, officials said on Saturday.
The rescue operation was carried out on Friday afternoon by personnel of the Ghumusar South forest division. The deer was later shifted to a safe location under forest department care, they said.
Forest officials suspect the animal may have strayed into the village from nearby forest areas in search of food or after being separated from its mother.
The barking deer, locally known for its distinct vocal sound, is a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Authorities have urged locals to inform the forest department immediately if they spot wild animals instead of keeping them in captivity.
