Exemplary Coordination by Indian Coast Guard Prevents Losses During Cyclone Remal
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has been lauded for its exceptional coordination with central and state agencies in effectively managing the impact of Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) ‘Remal’. Originating as a low-pressure area on May 22, Cyclone Remal rapidly intensified into a severe storm before making landfall on the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on the night of May 26-27.
The ICG’s proactive measures included deploying ships, aircraft, and shore-based surveillance systems to ensure the safety of life and property at sea. They successfully diverted merchant fleets away from the storm’s path and issued timely alerts via remote operating stations in Haldia and Paradip, benefiting fishing boats and merchant vessels in transit.
Post-cyclone, ICG Ship Varad conducted an assessment mission from Paradip, while two ICG Dornier aircraft from Bhubaneswar performed extensive surveillance in the North Bay of Bengal. Thanks to these efforts, there were no reported casualties or significant property damage at sea.
The ICG’s swift response and effective coordination highlight their crucial role in disaster management, safeguarding coastal communities and maritime activities during natural calamities.
