Chile Foreign Minister’s Visit to India Strengthens Bilateral Ties: MEA

The visit of Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, to India has significantly advanced bilateral relations between the two nations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Chilean minister’s official visit took place from August 27 to 31 at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

During the visit, both foreign ministers co-chaired the second India-Chile Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on August 28, reviewing progress on various areas of cooperation and identifying new opportunities to enhance bilateral ties. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges, highlighting the commitment to deepening India-Chile relations.

Van Klaveren also met with India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to explore avenues for expanding economic collaboration. The two ministers jointly inaugurated the Chile-India Business (Agriculture) Summit, which focused on promoting trade and investment in the agricultural sector, a key area of interest for both countries.

As part of his visit, the Chilean foreign minister delivered a lecture at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), engaging with students and scholars on the evolving geopolitical landscape and the role of India and Chile in fostering multilateral cooperation.

The MEA noted that the visit provided a valuable platform to strengthen existing partnerships and further expand cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, education, and technology. The visit underscores the growing importance of India-Chile ties and their shared commitment to advancing mutual interests on the global stage.

This diplomatic engagement is expected to lead to new agreements and initiatives that will enhance economic and strategic collaboration between the two countries.
