Botswana Gifts India Eight Cheetahs for Next Phase of Project Cheetah; President Murmu Witnesses Symbolic Release

In a significant step toward strengthening wildlife conservation ties between India and Botswana, President Droupadi Murmu and President Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana on Thursday witnessed the symbolic release of eight cheetahs at the Mokolodi Nature Reserve near Gaborone. The event marks Botswana’s gift of eight cheetahs to India as part of the next phase of Project Cheetah, deepening cooperation between the two nations in biodiversity preservation.

The cheetahs, originating from Botswana’s Ghanzi region, were released into a quarantine facility by experts from both countries. This symbolic gesture marks a new chapter in India-Botswana relations, underscoring shared commitment to wildlife conservation and ecological restoration.

Later in the day, Vice President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe and Minister of International Relations Dr. Phenyo Butale called on President Murmu for bilateral discussions on strengthening cooperation in trade, education, health, digital technology, agriculture, and renewable energy.

Before concluding her visit, President Murmu addressed the Indian community in Botswana at a reception hosted by the High Commissioner of India in Gaborone. Accompanied by Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways Shri V. Somanna and Members of Parliament Parbhubhai Nagarbhai Vasava and D. K. Aruna, she lauded the contributions of the Indian diaspora to Botswana’s growth.

“The people of India are proud of your achievements. You are true cultural ambassadors, reflecting the shared values of hard work, honesty, and harmony that define both India and Botswana,” President Murmu said.

She encouraged the community to continue contributing to Botswana’s progress while strengthening ties with India, urging them to take advantage of initiatives like the OCI scheme and Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.

President Murmu emphasized that the India-Botswana partnership rests on trust, respect, and shared democratic values, and reaffirmed the commitment to deepen collaboration across key sectors.

The President will return to New Delhi on November 14, marking the successful completion of her state visits to Angola and Botswana — furthering India’s engagement with Africa in the spirit of partnership and sustainable development.
