BJD Slams BJP Over Rising Crime

BJD Women Leaders Threaten Statewide Protests Over Odisha’s Law and Order Situation
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday strongly criticized the BJP-led Odisha government for the alleged breakdown in law and order, particularly concerning the safety of women and children, and warned of widespread street protests if immediate action is not taken.
At a press conference held in Bhubaneswar, senior BJD women leaders—including Vice President and MLA Pramila Mallik, General Secretaries Snehangini Chhuria, Tukuni Sahu, Rajashree Mallik, and Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das—voiced their deep concern over what they described as a rapid deterioration in public safety and governance since the BJP assumed power.
“The number of crimes against women has increased sharply, indicating a complete breakdown of the law and order machinery,” said Pramila Mallik, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should only visit Odisha after addressing the state’s worsening security scenario. Modi is expected to attend the first-anniversary celebration of the BJP government in Odisha on Friday.
The BJD leaders accused the state government of prioritizing propaganda over governance and failing to protect its citizens. They criticized the ruling party’s rhetoric around ‘Odia Asmita’ (Odia Pride), calling it a “mockery in the face of rising crime”.
Snehangini Chhuria cited alarming statistics from the State Assembly, stating that over 3,054 rape cases were reported in Odisha in the past year alone. She further pointed out that eight out of the ten most crime-prone states in India are governed by the BJP, arguing that the trend reflects a broader pattern of administrative failure.
Chhuria also expressed concern over the declining functionality of women and child help desks in police stations, which were widely set up during the tenure of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. “Many of these desks are no longer functioning properly, leaving victims helpless,” she said.
The leaders demanded that the state government take urgent and effective measures to restore law and order. They warned that if the current situation continues, the BJD will intensify its agitation and mobilize protests across the state.
The sharp statements mark a significant escalation in political tension in Odisha, as the BJD positions itself as a vocal opposition force in the face of growing public concerns over safety and governance.
