Ashwin Joins SydneyThunder, Makes BBL History

Ashwin Signs with Sydney Thunder for BBL, Creates History

Bengaluru, Sep 27: Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has officially signed with Sydney Thunder to play in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), becoming the first major Indian cricketer to feature in the tournament.

Ashwin, who announced his retirement from both international cricket and the IPL last year, was earlier in talks with multiple franchises in the International T20 League (ILT20) in Dubai before finalizing his move to the Thunder. The clarity offered by the team management regarding his role, along with the opportunity to play under the leadership of former Australian batsman David Warner, proved decisive.

“Sydney Thunder clearly communicated how they plan to use me and showed faith in my abilities. I am excited to contribute and play for the Thunder nation,” Ashwin said after the signing.

Thunder’s General Manager Trent Copeland hailed the move as one of the league’s landmark signings. “Ashwin’s experience and skills impressed the club. He is also eager to mentor and play alongside Australia’s young spinners Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green. This is one of the biggest signings in BBL history, featuring an iconic Indian cricketer,” Copeland noted.

At 39, Ashwin joins Unmukt Chand (Melbourne Renegades) and Nikhil Chaudhary (Hobart Hurricanes) as Indian players who have entered foreign leagues after retiring from Indian cricket.

Following his IPL exit last December, Ashwin has opened up his calendar for international T20 leagues and will also represent India at the Hong Kong Sixes later this year. The signing not only extends his illustrious career but also highlights his continuing impact on global T20 cricket.
