Probe Launched Into Mango Kernel Deaths in Odisha; Opposition Slams Govt

The Odisha government has initiated an inquiry into the tragic deaths of two women in Kandhamal district, allegedly caused by consuming mango kernel gruel. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday directed the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) of the Southern Division to investigate the incident, which has also led to several others reportedly suffering from medical complications.

The incident, which occurred in a remote village of Kandhamal, has sparked political uproar. Opposition parties, including the BJD and Congress, have criticized the ruling BJP for its “negligence and failure” to address hunger and poverty in the region.

“This is a result of the government’s apathy toward the marginalized communities. Despite repeated warnings, the administration has failed to ensure proper food security in these areas,” said a senior BJD leader.

Congress leaders echoed similar sentiments, accusing the government of neglecting the basic needs of tribal populations.

Meanwhile, the state government has assured strict action based on the findings of the RDC’s investigation. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and taking necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” a government spokesperson said.

Mango kernel consumption is traditionally associated with food scarcity in impoverished regions. Experts have long warned about its potential health risks, especially when consumed in large quantities.

The probe will focus on the causes of the deaths, the health condition of the affected individuals, and the availability of food resources in the region. Authorities are also exploring ways to provide immediate relief and support to the affected families.

The incident has reignited discussions about food security and malnutrition in Odisha’s tribal-dominated areas, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
