147 Dead in Odisha Cyclones

147 Killed, Rs 19,529 Crore Loss in Odisha Cyclones Over 12 Years
As many as 147 people lost their lives in cyclones that struck Odisha over the past 12 years, the state Assembly was informed on Thursday.
Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, in a written reply to a question by Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati, said Odisha was hit by 12 cyclones between 2014 and 2025. Out of these, four cyclones resulted in a total of 147 fatalities.
The minister further stated that the cumulative financial loss due to these cyclones amounted to Rs 19,529 crore, reflecting extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture, housing and public property.
Odisha, located along India’s eastern coastline, is frequently impacted by severe cyclonic storms originating in the Bay of Bengal. The state government has in recent years strengthened its disaster preparedness and evacuation systems, which officials say have helped in reducing casualties despite recurring natural calamities.
The data presented in the Assembly highlights both the human and economic toll of extreme weather events on the state over the past decade.
