Why Can’t You Keep Still After Intense Exercise? Experts Explain

Ever feel like you just can’t sit still after an intense workout? Whether you’re pacing around after finishing a match or repeatedly squatting after a run, it’s a common experience for many people post-exercise. But why does the body react this way?

According to Dr. Ken Nosaka from Edith Cowan University, there’s science behind the fidgeting and restlessness many people experience after physical exertion. While it may seem instinctive or even odd, this behavior is part of the body’s natural recovery process.

When we push our bodies during exercise, the muscles and systems involved undergo stress, leading to microscopic damage and inflammation. Post-exercise, the body seeks to regulate and recover from the strain, and increased movement may help promote blood circulation and aid in the removal of metabolic waste products.

“This restlessness is actually the body’s way of speeding up recovery,” explains Dr. Nosaka. “It’s a natural response to physical exertion, and movement helps with the rebalancing of bodily systems after exercise.”

In addition, movements like pacing or standing and sitting repeatedly may also serve to counteract the muscle stiffness and soreness that often follow strenuous workouts. Engaging in light physical activity after intense exercise can prevent the muscles from tightening up and may even reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

So, while it might feel like you’re just jittery, your body might just be doing exactly what it needs to recover and prepare for the next session.
