WhatsApp Learning Keeps Odisha Students Engaged

Odisha Launches WhatsApp Learning Groups to Support Students During Summer Vacation

Bhubaneswar – In an innovative effort to keep students academically engaged during the summer break, the Odisha government has launched the “Odisha Summer Learning Programme,” creating around 1.7 lakh WhatsApp groups across the state to facilitate home-based learning for students of government schools.

According to official sources, more than 11 lakh parents have actively joined these groups, which are being managed under the supervision of schoolteachers. The programme is spearheaded by the Department of School and Mass Education and targets students from Classes 1 to 8.

The initiative aims to ensure continuity in learning during the vacation period using creative educational content. Through these WhatsApp groups, teachers are regularly sending video lessons and learning materials involving numbers, letters, and hands-on activities tailored to different age groups. Parents are then guiding their children through the lessons and helping them complete the activities at home.

The programme is designed with a structured frequency: educational content is sent twice a week for students in Classes 1 to 3 and thrice a week for Classes 4 to 8. For the lower primary level (Classes 1 to 3), the materials cover Odia, Mathematics, and Environmental Science. For Classes 4 and 5, lessons are shared in Odia, Mathematics, Environmental Science, and English. Students in Classes 6 to 8 receive videos on Environmental Science, Social Science, and English.

Parents also play an interactive role by photographing their children’s completed work and sharing it in the WhatsApp groups. This allows teachers to assess the students’ understanding, track progress, and provide timely feedback.

The programme reflects Odisha’s commitment to leveraging digital tools to maintain academic continuity and foster parental involvement in education, even during school holidays. By reaching children through platforms easily accessible to families, the initiative ensures that learning doesn’t stop when schools close for summer.
