Vandana Katariya Bids Farewell to International Hockey: A Journey of Grit, Glory, and Legacy

New Delhi, 1st April 2025 – Indian women’s hockey icon, Vandana Katariya, has officially announced her retirement from international hockey, closing the chapter on a remarkable 15-year career. With a staggering 320 international appearances and 158 goals, Vandana leaves an indelible mark as the most capped player in Indian women’s hockey history. Beyond the statistics, she leaves behind an inspiring legacy—a story of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to the growth of women’s hockey in India.

The 32-year-old forward, who made her debut for the senior national team in 2009, was an integral part of some of Indian hockey’s defining moments. Her leadership and skill were pivotal in India’s historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she became the first and only Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Games, a feat that further solidified her place in Indian sports history.

In an emotional announcement, Vandana shared her thoughts on her retirement: “This decision wasn’t easy, but I know it’s the right time. Hockey has been my life, and wearing the Indian jersey was the greatest honor. I leave with immense pride and gratitude. Indian hockey is in great hands, and I will always support the sport.”

Reflecting on her journey from humble beginnings in Roshnabad, Haridwar, Vandana said, “I started on dusty fields with big dreams, and today I am proud of everything I’ve accomplished. I thank my coaches, teammates, family, and fans for their unwavering support.”

Throughout her career, Vandana played in two Olympic Games (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020), two FIH Hockey Women’s World Cups (2018, 2022), three Commonwealth Games (2014, 2018, 2022), and three Asian Games (2014, 2018, 2022). She played an instrumental role in securing multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals for India, including victories at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy and the FIH Women’s Nations Cup.

Vandana’s Olympic success, particularly her unforgettable hat-trick against South Africa in the Tokyo 2020 Games, will remain a highlight of her career. She helped India reach the quarterfinals, contributing to the country’s best-ever finish at the Olympics in women’s hockey.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the sport, Vandana was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri (2022), Arjuna Award (2021), and numerous other accolades, including the Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award (2014) and the Dhanraj Pillay Award (2021, 2022).
