Trump Withdraws US from Global Institutions

Trump Withdraws US from Over 60 Global Institutions, Including UN Bodies
President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States from more than 60 international organisations, including key UN bodies and the India-France-led International Solar Alliance (ISA), calling them “redundant” and “contrary” to American interests.
Trump signed a memorandum on Wednesday titled “Withdrawing the United States from International Organisations, Conventions, and Treaties that Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States”.
Following the signing, Trump stated that he had determined it was “contrary” to U.S. interests to remain a member of, participate in, or provide support to 66 UN and non-UN organisations. The move reflects a continuation of his “America First” foreign policy approach, emphasising unilateral decision-making and reduced engagement in multilateral institutions.
While the specific organisations affected include several UN agencies and development bodies, the withdrawal also encompasses international coalitions and alliances where the U.S. has historically played a significant role, potentially affecting global cooperation on issues ranging from climate change to sustainable energy initiatives.
Experts have noted that the step could have diplomatic, economic, and strategic implications, as the United States has long been a major contributor to these institutions and a key player in shaping global policy.
Trump’s decision is expected to spark reactions from international partners, including India and France, who have actively supported institutions like the International Solar Alliance for promoting clean energy and global climate action.
