Theatre Actors Are Respected but Not Necessarily Loved: Adil Hussain

Acclaimed actor Adil Hussain, known for his performances in Ishqiya, Life of Pi, and English Vinglish, believes that while theatre actors command great respect, they do not receive the same level of affection as film stars.
A National School of Drama (NSD) graduate, Hussain pointed out that cinema actors gain more recognition due to the intimacy of the camera, which allows audiences to connect with them on a personal level.
“What I have noticed is that theatre actors are very respected but not necessarily loved. There is this affection that you feel for film actors because of the proximity that, ‘Oh, I know him…’. The camera can come so close to you and capture even your whispers and breath,” he explained.
He further highlighted that in theatre, the audience’s attention is not directed toward any single performer, unlike in films, where close-ups and framing guide the viewer’s focus.
Despite the differences in perception, Hussain remains an ardent supporter of theatre, emphasizing its artistic depth and the discipline it instills in actors.
