Slot-Based Darshan Plan Sparks Mixed Reactions

Odisha Considers Slot-Based Darshan System at Puri Jagannath Temple Amid Mixed Reactions
Puri, Apr 15: The Odisha government is actively considering the introduction of a slot-based darshan system at the revered Sri Jagannath Temple to streamline the flow of devotees and ensure a smoother pilgrimage experience, particularly during peak periods.
State Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said the proposal is under review in response to the growing influx of pilgrims, especially on weekends, holidays, and during major festivals. The proposed system aims to reduce congestion and improve crowd management inside the temple premises.
However, the move has drawn mixed reactions from various stakeholders. While some devotees have welcomed the initiative as a step toward better organization, they stressed the importance of prior consultations with the temple’s traditional bodies, including the Chhatisha Nijog and the Gajapati Maharaja, before any final decision is taken.
On the other hand, several servitors and stakeholders have raised concerns over the implementation of existing measures. They pointed out that the current queue system inside the Natamandop has not been effectively enforced. Additionally, pending initiatives such as installing air-conditioning in the Natamandop and constructing a ramp for differently-abled devotees remain unaddressed.
Local residents have also called for special provisions to ensure uninterrupted and convenient daily darshan for them.
Amid these discussions, security arrangements at the temple are being significantly strengthened. Girish Murmu recently chaired a high-level meeting to review safety measures. Key proposals include the installation of anti-drone systems, stricter frisking at entry points, and restrictions on mobile phone usage within the temple premises.
Authorities are also planning to install luggage and baggage scanners at locker facilities outside the temple, following recommendations from agencies like the NIA and NSG.
Meanwhile, a fresh controversy has emerged regarding alleged missing valuables from the temple treasury. Priyadarshan Pattnaik has lodged a complaint at the Simhadwar police station, claiming that three items from the Bahar Ratna Bhandar are missing during inventory verification.
Questioning remarks made by Justice Biswanath Rath that the items could be located in the Bhitar Ratna Bhandar, Pattnaik has demanded a transparent and thorough investigation into the matter.
The developments have sparked a wider debate on temple administration, balancing tradition with modern management practices, and ensuring both security and convenience for millions of devotees visiting Puri each year.
