Sambalpur Zoo Set for Major Upgrade

Sambalpur Zoo to Undergo Major Upgrade, Set to Become Mid-Sized Wildlife Attraction

Bhubaneswar, Nov 24 : The picturesque Sambalpur Zoo is set for a major transformation, with the Union Government announcing a comprehensive development plan to convert it into a mid-sized wildlife destination.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made the announcement on Monday while laying the foundation stones for multiple infrastructure projects inside the zoo premises. He informed that the first phase of upgradation has already begun with a sanctioned allocation of approximately ₹5 crore.

As part of the expansion plan, foundation stones were laid for new enclosures dedicated to tigers, crocodiles and gharials. Pradhan shared that the aim is to establish Sambalpur Zoo as a key centre of wildlife tourism in Odisha.

A policy-level decision has been taken to elevate Sambalpur Zoo from a “small zoo” category to a “mid-sized zoo.” To facilitate this, around 35 hectares of land from multiple government departments are being consolidated by the district administration. Plans are also underway to form the Sambalpur Zoo Authority, which will oversee the development and long-term management of the facility.

Currently, the zoo is home to melanistic (black) tigers, which remain a rare attraction for visitors. With the construction of a new glass viewing enclosure, the administration plans to introduce two pairs of Royal Bengal Tigers. The zoo presently accommodates over 70 animals and birds, and additional space will be created for new species, particularly various bird varieties.

Pradhan said the initiative reflects a strong national commitment toward wildlife preservation. Once upgraded, Sambalpur Zoo is expected to emerge as a prominent tourist destination, drawing visitors keen to witness rare species including the Royal Bengal Tiger, crocodiles and gharials.

Highlighting the educational importance of zoological parks, he noted that zoos serve as “open learning spaces” for students and the general public, fostering awareness about biodiversity and environmental conservation.

The Minister further stated that enhanced tourism will contribute to the local economy by creating job opportunities and supporting small businesses.

Beyond the zoo’s modernization, complementary efforts will be made to develop facilities at Hirakud, Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Ushakothi Sanctuary and the historic Bhimamandali rock art site. Sambalpur’s renowned handloom heritage, traditional cuisine, weaving craftsmanship and the revered Maa Samaleswari Temple will also be promoted as part of a holistic tourism push.

With these developments, Sambalpur is poised to take a significant step toward becoming a major wildlife and cultural tourism hub in Odisha.
